A mother knitting and her daughter reading the Bible - Engraving reproduced and digitally restored by © Norbert Pousseur

Woman and child of Friesland.

The head dress of the women of this province is extremely be- coming, and the mixture of fine lace and gold ornament gives it a very handsome appearance.

The child has a Bible upon her knees,' and her mother is explaining a passage in it, which she did not understand. Few other things would induce her to suspend her work, but the Dutch, as they are very industrious, are also, in general, extremely anxious about the éducation of their children, and par- ticularly so in what relates to their religions principles.

Interior scene of a mother and daughter. In those days, there was no TV or smartphone, but knitting and reading. A bit like today, sometimes. However, nowadays, even if we can find the same situation, it is rare that children still read the Bible (except in some very religious societies. (Editor's notes)
